If you sell jets or turboprops, you are an artist!


Selling jets and turboprops is an art form. Therefore by default, you as an aircraft sales person, are in fact an artist.

Right out of the box, that gorgeous jet or turboprop sitting in front of the customer, that is your canvas. That is the starting point.  Get them inside the plane, and even fly them on a trip, and you are a sky god. You have reached and exceeded the necessary wow factor.

However, after the wow factor, and you get around to selling the aircraft, and the deal is all but done, then someone from the owners entourage asks, how much does it cost to own and operate the aircraft.

That is where things can start to go wrong. Most buyers or would be owners do not know or understand the language of aviation. “Beautiful” and “amazing” are not actual aviation or operational terms.

That is usually the turning point in most sales and where you the artist comes in.

Of course as the sales person you immediately get thrust into trying to explain the many confusing costs in terms of operational langue, purpose, and frequency, and we all know, things will get confusing to the customer.

Customers do not like that. Customers like to think they understand everything you are talking about. And the fact is, they simply cannot without understand aviation, anymore than the he or she can understand brain surgery unless they happen to be a brain surgeon. And yet, customers do not want to look flummoxed. They are the big shots in the room, not you, and now you are making them feel nescient. None of that is intentional of course, but what is the difference once the harm is done.
